what we can do

Full-service lab relocation, managed by people who know lab equipment

Every move is planned in advance with your team to define scope, routes, and safety protocols before anything is packed. A GMI project manager oversees the process from planning through execution and is on-site for the move, alongside a service engineer for equipment handling.

Full lab & instrument relocation

We inventory, pack, and transport benchtop and floor-standing instruments — centrifuges, cryo and −80° freezers, biosafety cabinets, HPLC/FPLC and GC systems — under chain-of-custody controls built for regulated environments.

  • Chain-of-custody inventory & labeling
  • Climate-controlled transport for temperature-sensitive assets
  • Certified crating for sensitive optics & electronics
Technician recalibrating an HPLC system

Decommission, reinstallation & recalibration coordination

Our team safely powers down and disconnects instruments at the old site, reinstalls them at the new one, and coordinates OEM or third-party recalibration so equipment is validated and ready before your team walks in.

  • Utility disconnect/reconnect coordination (power, gas, network)
  • Precision reinstallation to manufacturer specifications
  • Recalibration & validation scheduling before go-live

How It Works

A moving plan built around your lab

  1. 1
    Inventory & classification
Every instrument, sample, and consumable is logged, tagged, and classified by handling requirement.
  2. 2
    Site & pathway assessment
We review the new space’s electrical, plumbing, and network needs, and measure every doorway, hallway, and elevator on the route.
  3. 3
    Packing plan & materials
Crating, cushioning, and cold-chain containers are sourced to match each instrument’s sensitivity.
  4. 4
    Chain-of-custody pack & transport
Items are sealed, tracked, and moved under continuous chain-of-custody documentation.
  5. 5
    Reinstallation & recalibration coordination
Equipment is set in place, reconnected, and scheduled for recalibration and validation.
  6. 6
    Sign-off & verification
Your team inspects and signs off before we close out the project.

Every move starts with a conversation about your instruments and your timeline.

Common questions

Do you handle cold-chain items like samples and reagents?+

Yes — we source dry ice, cold packs, and refrigerated or frozen transport as needed, and coordinate timing so temperature-sensitive materials spend minimal time in transit.

Do you only serve labs near your three headquarters?+

No — GMI relocation teams travel nationwide from our Minneapolis, San Diego, and Boston hubs, including multi-site and long-distance moves.

How far in advance should we schedule a move?+

Most lab relocations are booked 4–8 weeks out, though we can accommodate shorter timelines. Larger or multi-department moves benefit from more lead time for site assessment and permitting.

Are your teams trained for regulated environments?+

Yes — our crews are trained on chain-of-custody requirements and handling protocols common in pharma, biotech, and academic labs, including biosafety cabinet and regulated-material moves.

What happens to equipment we’re not taking with us?+

We can help retire, sell, or recycle instruments you’re leaving behind — including trade-in and buyback options through GMI, so your old site is fully cleared without a separate vendor.

Are our instruments insured during the move?+

Yes — all relocations are covered under GMI’s insurance, and major assets are documented and verified before and after transport as part of our chain-of-custody process.

Do you handle the reinstallation and recalibration, or just the move?+

Both — a GMI service engineer handles reinstallation to manufacturer spec, and we coordinate OEM or third-party recalibration so equipment is validated before your team is back up and running.

Can you work around our lab’s operating schedule to limit downtime?+

Yes — moves can be scheduled after hours, on weekends, or in phases so critical instruments stay in service as long as possible before transport.

Can you move one instrument instead of an entire lab?+

Yes — we handle single-instrument moves as well as full lab relocations, using the same chain-of-custody handling and reinstallation process regardless of scope.
